Because of the ongoing pet thefts in Casper and across much of Wyoming, we recommend the following:
1) Stay with your pet at all times when they are outside, even in a fenced yard. A woman watching TV heard her dog barking in the fenced back yard, and by the time she got outside, the dog had disappeared.
2) Be observant about vehicles circling the block checking to see what animals you have. Be especially vigilant about vehicles in alleys or at night. Most of these vehicles will be suv’s or pickups with cargo covers or toppers. Try to get a license plate number and vehicle description.
3) Be observant about vehicles which may follow you home from the dog park, pet stores or vet. We have a report of thieves sitting and watching the road for people with dogs in their cars.
4) Check fences daily for cuts in the chain link or loose boards indicating you are being set up for a theft. One of our members had a vehicle checking their home, then discovered the fence had been cut to allow the dogs to escape the yard, where the thief would be waiting.
5) Ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your house while you are away. In one instance the thief who was taking down a privacy fence with a pry bar to grab a dog let it go when a neighbor intervened.
6) Padlock your gates; it may slow the thief down long enough to prevent the theft. There are reports of people feeding treats to dogs to make friends with them so the actual theft is easy.
8) Micro-chip your animals. The thieves are discarding collars and tags, and the chip may eventually lead your animal back to you if the animal is found and the chip checked.
